A CRY FOR CHANGE: ADDRESSING LIFE'S EXTREME CONDITIONS IN OUR COMMUNITIES
In the heart of Nairobi lies Mathare—one of Kenya’s oldest and largest informal settlements. Narrow alleys lined with makeshift homes, open sewers, and overcrowded spaces tell a story of hardship, resilience, and silent cries often unheard. Amid the noise of daily survival, the voice of a child echoes loudest: a cry for change.
Many children in Mathare are born into extreme poverty, where access to clean water, proper sanitation, education, and healthcare is scarce. They grow up exposed to crime, malnutrition, neglect, and, in some cases, abuse. Parents, though deeply loving, often lack the resources and opportunities to offer their children a better future. The conditions are not just hard — they are heartbreaking.
It was within this reality that Mathare Community Outreach (MCO) was born.
What began over 30 years ago as a small act of compassion has grown into a community-based organization grounded in faith and action. MCO was founded with a single mission: to respond to the urgent and visible need for hope, restoration, and transformation in the slums of Kenya.
Today, MCO serves children and families through a holistic approach — offering education, food, healthcare, spiritual growth, and economic empowerment. We believe that true change happens when you address both immediate needs and long-term solutions, and when love is not just spoken but lived out.
Our work is powered by the belief that every child deserves to dream, every parent deserves dignity, and every community deserves a chance.
