In the heart of Nairobi lies Mathare Valley, one of Kenya’s oldest and largest informal settlements a community marked by overcrowding, unsafe housing, open sewage lines, limited clean water, and persistent poverty. The narrow alleys and makeshift homes tell a story of hardship and resilience, but in the midst of daily struggle, the cry of a child in need is the loudest of all a cry for hope, dignity, and change.
Children in Mathare are born into circumstances most of the world never sees:
- Extreme poverty with limited access to clean water or proper sanitation
- High rates of malnutrition and preventable illness
- Educational barriers that keep many from attending or completing school
- Exposure to crime, abuse, and unsafe living environments
- Parents who love deeply but lack resources and opportunity
These conditions are not just challenging they are heartbreaking, and they demand action.
WHERE COMPASSION SPARKED A MOVEMENT
More than 30 years ago, Mathare Community Outreach (MCO) was formed in response to these urgent needs. What began as a humble act of compassion has grown into a faith-based, community-centered organization dedicated to restoring hope and transforming lives in the slums of Kenya.
MCO was founded with a clear mission:
To bring lasting change through Christ-centered care, education, nutrition, discipleship, and economic empowerment.
