With the increasing awareness on the need for food security in Kenya, we are venturing into agriculture as a sustainability program and also as a way of providing food for our projects. Currently we have a dairy cow project in Maseno, rabbits and pigs are soon setting up a pig farm in Nairobi. In the past we have had poultry which we are also soon restarting both in Nairobi and Maseno. We also have a greenhouse for tomato farming and vegetables in Maseno. These projects have the ability of injecting a considerable amount of money into our annual budget. The projects are being put in a new department that will be responsible for farming ventures that will be of benefit to the organization. In Maseno, we believe the proceeds from the farm will sustain the disciples in Moriah School of discipleship as well as the staff.
These two agricultural activities will be focused in the outskirts of Nairobi at a plot already identified for lease by the organization. On the said property the organization intends to keep Layer chicken to supply eggs to neighboring towns and keep pigs for selling both as a pork outlet and live pigs to other farmers. In this venture the organization will be able to generate income and at the same time through partnership with the local community, empower them and improve their standards of living.
This activity will be carried out within the church premises and will be used as an income generating activity as well as a community empowerment project through partnership with the Mathare community. The project will engage in selling of rabbit meat, rabbit fur (for its medicinal properties as well as the rabbit urine which is used in making organic compost).
This is a project that was started in Maseno and is mainly being run as to provide milk for the center. The same is also to enable the center generate income. These projects are all to work as a link with the communities as they will also provide those willing with opportunities to learn basic farming skills. In turn this will create positive awareness as an income generating activity and also work towards food security increase. We appreciate the partnership we have with bright hope world who has been very supporting in this venture. We will also collaborate with the ministry of agriculture for trainings and other possible support.
